Dock Cleaning and Maintenance Tips (Quick and Easy!)

How much maintenance is required to keep an aluminum dock clean and undamaged?

Aluminum docks are famously low maintenance, but they’re not completely maintenance-free. With unpredictable weather—including heavy snowfall, spring flooding, and summer storms—it’s important to inspect your dock each season. It doesn’t take long, and it helps protect your investment and your family’s safety.

Whether you leave your dock in the water year-round or reinstall it each spring, take time before your first boat ride or fishing trip to check for wear and tear.

Aluminum won’t rust, but it can corrode over time. Plus, lake gunk, algae, and debris can build up. An annual cleaning keeps your dock looking good and promotes safe footing. A gentle power wash or scrub with environmentally-safe cleaner is usually all you need.

Check These Things Before Using Your Dock This Summer

What are the most important things to check on your dock after winter?

For starters, you should check the water level, dock height, and damage done by ice and snow.

Check the Water Level and Adjust Your Dock Height

Water levels continue to fluctuate on the Great Lakes and inland lakes alike. Changes in rainfall, shoreline development, and even wildlife activity can cause noticeable differences from year to year. Make sure your dock is sitting at a safe height above the water. Ideally, waves shouldn’t be able to wash over the surface. Aluminum dock systems make adjusting leg heights quick and easy—no heavy lifting required.

Inspect for Winter Damage

Ice can twist up and put stress on your dock’s structure. In the spring, look closely at all welds and seams for cracks. If you find any damage, you can easily order replacement sections. Also, check if your dock is level—you can use a carpenter’s level or measure from the deck down to the water at several points.
