Stability Comes from Quality Cast Parts

Comparison photo of injected molded plastic vs extruded vinyl.
Is your dock actually built for long-lasting stability?

Many dock parts are stamped or extruded. The problem with these parts is that they tend to bend, slip, or break; this causes instability, especially with bottom plates and crossarm clamps. Alumi-Span uses cast parts, which don’t flex over time like stamped or extruded parts. Using cast parts for your dock eliminates a big instability issue.

Why the Lakebed Matters

The bottom of the post has to sit on something solid. On firm sand or gravel, a post can sit directly on the bottom plates. But on soft, mucky, or silty bottoms, you need more bearing surface. That's where permanent dock bases come in.

  • Permanent augers screw into the bottom like a giant corkscrew, anchoring the post in place so it can't shift, even in soft sediment or current.
  • Mud boards spread the post's weight over a wider footprint, so the post doesn't sink into soft bottom over time.

For a dock you plan to leave in year-round, an anchored base is worth the extra effort. For seasonal docks, a mud board or well-seated post can be plenty; the key is knowing what your bottom is made of before you set the first section.

Stability Starts Below the Deck

Photo of an Alumi-Span brand aluminum boat dock.
Does your dock feel loose or unstable?

Every dock section you walk on transfers its weight to a handful of support points: the posts. Those posts carry the load down to the lakebed, and the crossarms spread the load between them so no single post is doing all the work. When this system is sound, your dock stays level and doesn't bounce or sway underfoot. When it isn't, you feel it in every step — and over time, a wobbly dock puts stress on the connections and deck sections a
bove it.

The good news: you don't have to replace the whole dock to fix the problem. Most stability issues are solved at the support level.

Start with the Right Posts

Posts are the backbone of the dock, so size matters. Alumi-Span's standard is 2" OD aluminum dock posts, which they recommend for all new applications. They're lighter and last longer than the older 1.9" OD posts found on many existing docks. If you're building new, go with 2". If you're retrofitting an older dock, measure carefully before ordering, because the two sizes don't mix.

Aluminum posts are the best choice for a few reasons: they won't rot like wood, they resist corrosion better than steel, and they are lighter for pulling in and out season after season. Many Alumi-Span docks are still in service after more than 50 years, and that longevity starts with the posts.

Don't Forget the Crossarms

Posts hold the dock up, but crossarms and platform trusses hold the posts together. They tie adjacent posts into a rigid frame, which is what keeps the whole structure from racking or twisting when a wave hits or when someone steps on the edge of the deck. If your dock has always felt a little "loose," missing or undersized crossarms are often the culprit.

How to Turn Your Dock into the Perfect Gathering Space

Photo of a boat dock with colorful chairs and a bench.
A dock can be much more than a place to tie up your boat. With thoughtful planning, it can become the
center of summer entertainment—a place where family and friends gather to enjoy meals, relax by the water, and make lasting memories.

Most people think of a dock as a place to tie up your boat. As much as a dock is useful for that purpose, many people fail to imagine the possibilities you can do with your dock. With careful planning, you can turn your dock into a gathering place on the water. This can be a space where memories are made with the people you love.

When you design your party dock, you should think about how you are going to use the space for gatherings. Having a wide platform gives people their own space, this makes relaxing on the dock comfortable. You should think about designated areas for swimming, fishing, or launching kayaks to maximize the docks use. Adding features like a swim ladder, dock lighting, or shaded seating can also make your dock more enjoyable from sunrise to sunset.

Why Make a Party Dock?

You might ask yourself, what’s the purpose of a party dock? Having a gathering space on your dock is a comfortable way to relax and unwind on nice summer days. Taking the boat out is a fun way to enjoy summer however that takes work. You have to start your boat, untie it from your dock, check to make sure you have all your lights and that everyone on board is safe. With a party dock, the only work you need to do is pull up a chair! Sometimes we want to enjoy the water without doing all of that work. A party dock is an easier and more comfortable way to enjoy the water.

5 Features Every Party Dock Should Have

Photo of a dock platform with chairs, an umbrella, and a paddleboard.
Having a dock that can support social gatherings enhances your life on the water. Hosting friends and
family on your dock should be a point of pride. Your party dock will always be there for you to relax on, especially if you don’t feel like taking out the boat.

Anytime you're hosting family gatherings, enjoying a quiet evening by the water, or spending weekends with friends, the right dock can make all the difference. Having the essentials is your first step to a great party dock.

Consider including these five features in your party dock:

  • A Spacious Platform – Give guests plenty of room to relax, socialize, and move around comfortably.
  • Comfortable Seating – Benches or weather-resistant outdoor furniture create a welcoming place to gather.
  • Shade Options – Umbrellas or canopies help keep everyone cool during warm summer days.
  • Safe Access – Non-slip surfaces, ladders, and proper lighting make your dock safer for family and guests.
  • Room for Recreation – Design your dock with space for swimming, fishing, paddleboards, or tying up your boat.

A thoughtfully planned dock should balance entertainment, functionality, and durability. With a modular aluminum dock system, it's easy to customize your layout and expand it over time as your needs change.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Other Dock Materials - How Do They Compare?

Photo of an aluminum boat dock made by Alumi-Span.
When building or replacing a dock, the material you choose impacts everything: maintenance,
durability, and long-term value. Here’s how anodized aluminum compares to the most common options.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Wood

Wood offers a classic and natural look, but it comes with ongoing upkeep. Regular staining, sealing, and inspections are needed to prevent rot, splintering, and insect damage. Over time, boards can warp, fasteners loosen, and structural integrity declines.

Anodized aluminum eliminates those concerns. It won’t rot, splinter, or attract insects, and it doesn’t require seasonal treatments. For long-term performance without yearly maintenance, it’s the more practical choice.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Standard Aluminum

Not all aluminum docks perform the same. Standard (mill-finish) aluminum can discolor, develop surface pitting, and take on a chalky appearance over time (especially in humid environments). It may also leave residue on surfaces it contacts.

Anodized aluminum solves these issues by creating a harder, more stable surface that resists corrosion, discoloration, and wear. The result is a dock that maintains both its appearance and performance far longer.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Vinyl

Vinyl is lightweight and low-maintenance, but it has notable limitations. It can become uncomfortably hot in direct sunlight and may be more prone to surface damage under heavy use.

Anodized aluminum stays cooler all summer long, offers greater surface durability, and provides the structural strength needed for larger or more demanding dock setups.

The Verdict

Each material has its place, depending on budget and preference. But when the goal is long-term durability, minimal maintenance, and consistent performance, anodized aluminum stands out as the stronger overall investment.

What Makes Anodized Aluminum the Best Material for Your Dock?

A photo of an aluminum boat dock made by Alumi-Span.
Choosing the right dock material can mean the difference between constant upkeep and decades of
reliable use. Anodized aluminum stands out as a long-term solution built for real waterfront conditions.

It’s Built into the Metal

Anodizing isn’t a coating; it’s a process that transforms the surface of aluminum into a harder, more durable layer. Because it becomes part of the metal, it won’t chip, peel, or wear away over time.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

In waterfront environments, untreated aluminum can discolor and develop surface damage over time. Anodized aluminum creates a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture and environmental wear, keeping your dock looking and performing better for longer.

Low Maintenance

Wood docks require frequent sealing and repairs, and standard aluminum docks can also require upkeep over time. Anodized aluminum docks keep things simple. Rinsing your dock with fresh water is typically all it takes to maintain its appearance and performance.

Built to Last and Looks Great Doing It

Anodized aluminum resists fading, darkening, and uneven wear, maintaining a clean, consistent appearance over time. It’s a material designed to deliver long-term performance for years to come.

Make Your Dock Safe for Young Family Members

Photo of a girl sitting on a boat dock, setting a paper boat in the water below.
In our last blog, we talked about accessories that can help make your dock safer. Here are a few
additional safety tips to go with them:

1. Choose Non-Slip Decking for Foot Traffic

Children tend to sprint across a dock toward the water — and slippery surfaces can turn that excitement into a dangerous slip. Non-slip decking materials are essential:
  • Vinyl and Aluminum Decking with textured treads keeps traction even when wet and bare feet are involved.
  • Hand-sorted Lumber deck boards reduce the risk of splinters.
Whether you select premium wood, vinyl, or aluminum options, surfaces designed to shed water and provide traction help prevent falls.

2. Keep the Dock Well-Lit

Good lighting isn’t just for evening dock parties — it’s a safety essential. Dock lights help families spot changes in walking surfaces, avoid tripping hazards, and safely transit the dock at dusk or after dark.
Solar LED lights or post cap lights are easy to install and low-maintenance.

3. Keep the Walkway Clear & Organized

A cluttered dock is a tripping hazard:
  • Store ropes, life jackets, and water toys in designated bins.
  • Mount paddleboard and kayak racks to keep walkways clear and free of clutter.
Organized docking space makes it easier for kids to walk without unexpected obstacles.

4. Ensure Regular Maintenance

A safe dock isn’t a one-time project — it’s ongoing care. Regular checks help catch and fix:
  • Loose boards
  • Worn connections
  • Mildew or algae buildup that can make surfaces slick
Routine cleaning and seasonal maintenance keep your dock structurally sound and safe for kids.

5. Safety Gear Should Be Easy to Access

Even with the best dock design, accidents can happen:
  • Keep child-sized life jackets near dock entrances so kids can easily grab them before stepping onto the dock.
  • Have first-aid kits nearby with supplies for minor cuts and scrapes.
When safety gear is visible and accessible, family members are more likely to use it.

Boat Dock Parts for Safety

A photo of boat dock bumpers in various colors offered by Alumi-Span Docks.
Your dock may be cleaned up and ready for spring, but is it safe?

A range of accessories can dramatically improve dock safety for young family members:

Dock Bumpers

Soft bumpers around edges cushion hard surfaces that kids might bump into or trip over, and also protect boats and dock edges.

Stairs & Ladders

Easy-to-use stairs or ladders allow kids to enter and exit the water safely — far preferable to climbing on slippery rocks or jumping into deep water without support.

Corner Sections

These eliminate gaps or edges where children might be tempted to jump, giving a smooth, safe transition around the end of your dock.

How to Choose the Right Dock for Your Lakefront Property

Photo of an aluminum boat dock installed in a lake with colorful chairs set up in a semi-circle.
Unsure what type of dock best fits your needs?

Choosing the right boat dock isn’t just about looks — it’s about function, durability, and long-term value.

Factors like water depth, lake bottom conditions, and seasonal water level changes all play a role. For many inland lakes, a stationary aluminum sectional dock offers the best combination of strength, stability, and ease of use.

A well-chosen dock can provide decades of reliable service and countless memories on the water.

Understanding the Most Common Types of Boat Docks

A photo of an aluminum boat dock installed in a lake.
Are you finally ready to install a boat dock?

Not all boat docks are created equal. The right dock for your property depends on your shoreline, water depth, and how you plan to use it.

Stationary docks are a favorite on inland lakes thanks to their stability and long-term durability. Floating docks offer flexibility in deeper water or where water levels fluctuate. Pipe docks can be budget-friendly but often require more maintenance over time. Sectional docks give property owners the ability to customize and expand their layout as needs change.

Understanding these differences makes it much easier to choose a dock that will serve you well for years to come.
