Time to Start Planning for Fall!

Photo of a boat dock installed with Alumi-Span parts.
How do you know when to start winterizing or removing your dock?

Here are a few tips on general timing, as well as regional recommendations!

Signs It’s Time to Start Planning

While every lake and river has its own seasonal rhythm, here are a few signs you should start thinking about dock removal or winterization:

  • Water Temperatures Are Dropping. Cold water makes late-season work more uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.
  • Weather is Becoming Unpredictable. Fall storms can bring wind, waves, and ice sooner than expected.
  • End of Boating Season. Once you’re done with boats and personal watercraft for the year, your dock’s off-season prep can begin.

Regional Timing Recommendations

Your ideal timing will depend on your location. Here are a few examples:

  • Northern Climates: Ice formation can start as early as October or November, so removal or winterization should happen before freezing conditions set in.
  • Milder Regions: You may have more flexibility, but don’t wait until heavy winds or snow are in the forecast.
  • Fluctuating Water Levels: If your area sees significant water level changes in the fall, factor that into your schedule to avoid working in unsafe conditions.

Getting Ready for Summer - Part 2

Dock Designs
In our last blog, we talked about setting a budget and considering the usage of your future dock. This week, we’ll continue with design planning and shore considerations!

Plan for Maintenance and Looks

If you’d rather spend your weekends enjoying the water instead of sanding or staining wood, aluminum is the way to go. It’s virtually maintenance-free and built to withstand the elements. Prefer the look of wood? No problem—many aluminum docks now come in finishes that mimic the natural beauty of wood without the upkeep. Alumi-Span also offers real wood options.

Know Your Shoreline

Your dock should work with your lake, not against it. Things like shoreline type, lakebed conditions, seasonal water level changes, wave activity, and even prevailing winds all play a big role in determining the best dock design. A custom-fit dock ensures better performance, safety, and longevity.

Getting Ready for Summer - Part 1

Dock Designs
Are you looking to build a boat dock?

Maybe you’re planning on upgrading your current dock?

Here are a couple things to think about before you get started:

Set Your Budget

Materials are often the biggest factor when it comes to cost. Aluminum docks might be a bit more expensive upfront than wood, but they more than make up for it in durability and low maintenance. They’re built to last—and they’ll save you time, effort, and money in the long run.

Think About How You’ll Use It

Will your dock just be a spot to tie up your boat, or do you want it to double as a hangout space? If you’re planning on relaxing, entertaining, or even fishing from your dock, aluminum is a great option. It’s lightweight, stays cool in the summer sun, and is easy to clean—perfect for a multifunctional setup.

Installing a Truss and Platform System - A Brief Overview

How to Build a Boat Dock
This month, we are sharing our quick step-by-step guide to installing a truss and platform system
dock
. If you don’t have time to read the whole thing just yet, here’s a quick summary of the essentials:

1. Understanding Alumi-Span Trusses

Alumi-Span offers pre-assembled trusses in standard lengths from 8' to 20'. Trusses have to horizontal poles with built in diagonal bracing, so there is no need for blind legs under the dock.  All adjustment can be made from the corners.

There are two types of trusses:
  • Regular Trusses – Feature a pole at each end.
  • 90-Degree Trusses – Have one pole and clamps rotated 90 degrees for attachment to cross-arms to run a platform 90-degrees or perpendicular to an outgoing dock.

2. Key Installation Steps (Fast and Simple!)

A. Positioning the Truss Correctly
  • Ensure the center casting (#310A) is on top with the “V” shape pointing upward for maximum strength.
  • Use large bottom plates to simplify installation and stabilize the trusses.

B. Assembling the Dock Platform
  • Bring sections out one at time and place on truss.
  • Securely bolt deck sections together for a firm fit.
  • Use black plastic platform connectors for added stability.

C. Properly Placing Stringer Brackets
  • Position stringer brackets correctly to prevent trusses from sticking out beyond the dock sections.

D. Securing the Trusses
  • Firmly clamp both upper and lower truss clamps before applying weight.
  • To adjust the height, loosen and re-secure both clamps as needed.
  • To raise center, leave top clamp tight, loosen and raise only bottom clamp

Things to Consider Before Building a Boat Dock

How to Build a Boat Dock Michigan, Michigan How to Build a Boat Dock
Have you been waiting for the right time to build your boat dock? There are a few things to take into consideration before you start!

Shorelines. What does the shoreline look like where you live? Grassy? A steep descent? Rocky? This will also influence the type of dock you construct.

Water Levels and Currents. Is there a lot of boat traffic and strong currents where you live? Do water levels fluctuate often? Consider the water level of your lake before you build.

Lake Bottom Sedimentation. Before you choose a dock style, consider the bottom of the water! Is it flat and sandy? Mucky? Research which dock types will suit the lake bottom best.

Laws & Ordinances. Some lakes have regulations on maximum dock length or rules about taking the docks out in winter.  Make sure to do your research and find out what is required by the lake, county, and state where you live.

Time for Maintenance. How much time do you have to perform yearly maintenance on your dock?  Are you able to spend time staining, etc. or do you need a dock that is maintenance free?

Having a Hard Time Deciding on Materials for Your Wooden Dock?

If you need to build or rebuild a wooden dock, you want the most durable wood available that will be low maintenance and last a lifetime. Your boat dock sees a lot of abuse from waves, being saturated with water, and storm conditions. Constant moisture is an enemy for all boat dock materials whether they’re wood or composite, and can lead to faster rot and decay.

Choose the right type of wood for a natural looking dock that will be around at your family property for generations:

Pressure treated pine: This is the most common and affordable type of wood used for boat docks. The initial cost is the cheapest compared to other options, and should last you 20 years or more with annual maintenance. This type of wood has been known to splinter over time, so beware when you’re walking barefoot!

“I would highly recommend Alumi-Span Docks. I found the company on the internet and have never regretted one minute of our transaction. From the first call, anyone with whom I spoke was professional and friendly. Sketches were sent to me, and I placed my order in November 2017. Per my request, the dock was delivered at the end of March 2018. I was not required to have anyone on site to help unload it and, also per my request, they carried it to the lake side of my home. I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with this company.”
