Upgrade Your Dock Hardware This Off-Season

A photo of assorted boat dock hardware parts made by Alumi-Span.
Need to upgrade your dock, but not ready to invest in a brand-new setup?

This off-season, you can replace parts and rebuild your existing dock to make it nicer for the spring, without committing to the time and price of installing an entirely new dock!

Replace Old Hardware & Upgrade Parts

Bolts, brackets, and cleats wear down over time. Replacing rusted or loose hardware now can prevent dangerous failures next season. Consider upgrading to higher-quality hot-dipped galvanized or stainless-steel parts for a longer-lasting dock.

If you already use our hardware, the hot-dipped galvanized won’t corrode, but it can still wear down with age. If your hardware is old, we recommend at least inspecting it to make sure it’s in good shape for next year.

If your dock has seen better days but still has a usable frame, rebuilding may be the best option. New decking materials can bring fresh life to an old dock while keeping costs manageable.

Winterization vs Removal

Photo of a boat dock installed with Alumi-Span parts.
What’s the difference between winterizing a dock and removing it from the lake?

In short, winterization is for boat docks that are permanent and can withstand winter weather in the lake, and removal is for docks that aren’t permanent. Here’s a few tips for preparing for both situations.

If You’re Leaving the Dock in for Winter

Whether or not a dock can be left in depends mostly on the lake.  If your lake doesn’t get large ice flows, AND there are no regulations against it, a dock can be left in. Ice flows are what usually cause dock damage, rather than just plain freezing.

If you’re leaving your dock in, you “winterize” the dock. If that’s your plan:

  • Remove accessories like lights, ladders, bumpers, and cleats to protect them from ice damage.
  • Double-check that cables, anchors, and hardware are in good condition to prevent shifting or breakage.

If You’re Removing the Dock

If your lake gets large ice flows or there are regulations against leaving it in, the dock needs to come out for the winter. If that’s the case:

  • Always remove leg sets from each section before storing.
  • Number your leg sets so when you install your boat dock next spring, you’ll have minimal re-leveling to do—saving both time and effort.
  • Store sections and parts in a secure place to protect.  If you decide to cover them to protect them from snow and ice, be sure there is air flow.  Don’t seal them in completely.

Time to Start Planning for Fall!

Photo of a boat dock installed with Alumi-Span parts.
How do you know when to start winterizing or removing your dock?

Here are a few tips on general timing, as well as regional recommendations!

Signs It’s Time to Start Planning

While every lake and river has its own seasonal rhythm, here are a few signs you should start thinking about dock removal or winterization:

  • Water Temperatures Are Dropping. Cold water makes late-season work more uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.
  • Weather is Becoming Unpredictable. Fall storms can bring wind, waves, and ice sooner than expected.
  • End of Boating Season. Once you’re done with boats and personal watercraft for the year, your dock’s off-season prep can begin.

Regional Timing Recommendations

Your ideal timing will depend on your location. Here are a few examples:

  • Northern Climates: Ice formation can start as early as October or November, so removal or winterization should happen before freezing conditions set in.
  • Milder Regions: You may have more flexibility, but don’t wait until heavy winds or snow are in the forecast.
  • Fluctuating Water Levels: If your area sees significant water level changes in the fall, factor that into your schedule to avoid working in unsafe conditions.

Dog-Friendly Dock Accessories

Dock Accessories
Do your dogs love spending time on the water?

If so, you’ll want to make sure that your dock is equipped with dog-safe accessories. Here are a few recommendations:

Dock End Bumpers: Prevent accidents by capping open ends with boat dock end bumpers. These not only dog-proof the dock but also add a personalized touch with various color options.

Stairs: Ensure your dog can get in and out of the water safely by installing stairs. Made in the USA for strength and durability, these are a must-have for any dog-friendly dock.

Safety Corners: Eliminate safety hazards with corner sections that provide a smooth transition from the dock to platforms, preventing injuries from jumping over open spaces.

Aluminum Boat Dock Q&A

Aluminum Boat Dock Michigan
Have you considered upgrading to an aluminum boat dock?

Before you purchase a boat dock, you probably have a few questions. Here are the most common questions we get from customers:

Q: Do Aluminum docks get hot?

A: We anodize the dock sections and stringers. Anodized Aluminum is the coolest dock we sell. Mill finished aluminum docks offered by other dock companies will turn dark and get very hot. Alumi-Span does not offer mill finished aluminum on our dock sections.

Q: Can I rebuild my old aluminum framed dock sections?

A: You can rebuild your old aluminum dock sections. We sell treated pine and stained cedar panels to replace worn out wood dock sections. Our unique interlocking aluminum board design also allows you to replace old wooden sections with cool anodized aluminum decking.

Q: Can I order your products online?

A: Everything we have on the website is available for purchase. All dock parts, poles, and accessories under 8 feet can be shipped UPS and can be purchased in our online store. Dock sections cannot be purchased online, so please call us directly for section prices. If you are trying to purchase a complete dock system, call us directly for a quote.

Preparing Your Dock for Spring

Aluminum Boat Dock Michigan
Spring is on the way! Is your dock prepared for the season?

Here’s what we recommend:

  • If you leave your dock in year-round, you should perform a maintenance check in the spring. Look for obvious signs of damage and corrosion before you attempt to use your dock recreationally.
  • Lake levels can fluctuate several inches year to year. Water levels change based on rain patterns or land use near your lake. You never want waves to come over the top of your dock, so check your platform height from the water and modify the leg heights as needed.
  • Ice can put a lot of twist pressure on structures, so be sure to inspect the brackets, clamps, and hardware. If you do find a cracked part, you can order a replacement for that piece. Check to see if your dock stayed level. You might choose to have it ramped up a bit from the shore or seawall, but it should be as level as possible. You can use a carpenter’s level or you can just measure from the deck to the water surface.
  • Your aluminum dock will not rust, but it can get dirty. Aluminum docks also get their fair share of algae, dead worms, leaves, and general lake gunk. It’s a good idea to clean your dock at least once a year.

How to Plan a Fall Boating Day Trip

Trying to squeeze out the last bit of semi-warm weather even after the kids go back to school?

Day cruising is a great way to get out on a Saturday or Sunday and enjoy the weather before the temperature changes for good!

Day cruising can also be fun for everyone – you can fish, picnic, or even just sail around if a quiet, lazy day is more your speed.

Here are some things to remember:

  1. Don’t forget your gear! Prepare for a day on the water and anticipate any activity with these safety items: lifejackets, signaling device, anchor, throwable flotation device, and fire extinguishers.
  2. Also think about how you’ll be spending your time and prepare accordingly. Consider water toys, skis, boards, fishing rods, and cooler.

Fall Fishing Tips for Cooler Weather

Is fishing one of your favorite ways to relax?

You don’t have to stop fishing just because the weather is starting to get cooler!

As the leaves change color and the air gets chilly, you can take full advantage of some great fishing weather.

Here’s our tips for great fall fishing:

  1. Pay attention to migration patterns in your area: As fall hits, baitfish are on the move, and their predators will follow. Follow those patterns and you’re sure to get a bite.
  2. Watch for birds: Gulls, terns, and other birds will be looking for schools of batfish, so if you see them swooping and diving, it’s a sure sign that you’re in the right spot.
  3. Look for fish in deep, cold spots: As the temperature of the water drops in most bodies of water, fish will be on the move looking for favorable conditions. Look for areas where they have easy access to both shallow and deep waters throughout the day, and you’ll likely hit the fishing jackpot.

Boat Maintenance: Paint Touch-Ups Can Be Easy

For many of us Michiganders, summer means getting out on our boats and hitting the lake. With all the good times our boats provide for us and our families, it’s only fair we take good care of them so they can continue to be part of our memories for years to come. Maintaining a boat is a lot of work, but one of the simplest steps is often the most neglected: applying paint to touch up your boat.

Application is easy, and there are paints for wood, metal and fiberglass boats. All you need to do is clean the desired surface and allow it to dry, then apply the paint with a brush or sponge. Above water paint only needs 2 hours to dry, and below water takes about 4.

To learn more about the difference between painting above and below the waterline, as well as general tips and tricks to brighten your vessel, click here
