The Cons of Vinyl Dock Sections (and How Alumi-Span Makes Them Better)

Up-close photo of a white vinyl dock made by Alumi-Span Docks.
In our last blog, we went of the pros of vinyl docks. However, vinyl isn’t the best material for everyone.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, especially when comparing vinyl to anodized aluminum:

1. Lower Structural Strength

While vinyl performs well as a decking surface, it is not as structurally strong as metal materials. However, when built correctly, vinyl sections can be very strong.  Alumi-Span has load tested their sections up to 1200 pounds!

2. Potential for Wear Over Time

Vinyl does hold more dirt than aluminum, making it require more frequent cleaning.  This and exposure to sun for years can cause some fading in the color.  Alumi-Span’s lighter, pastel colors limit this fade, so it is barely noticeable.

3. Not Ideal for Permanent Installation

While vinyl works well when being taken in and out each year, it is not ideal for permanent installation.  When temperatures drop below freezing, vinyl can get more brittle.  It does not break easy, but if something heavy is dropped on it, frozen vinyl can crack.

The Pros of Vinyl Dock Sections

Photo of a white vinyl dock section made by Alumi-Span Docks.
Vinyl dock sections are a popular option among waterfront property owners, but are they the right fit for
your needs?

Here’s a quick list of the pros of vinyl docks:

1. Affordable Upfront Cost

One of the biggest advantages of vinyl dock sections is their cost-effectiveness. Vinyl is generally less expensive than many other decking materials, making it a great option for property owners working within a budget.

2. Low Maintenance

Vinyl decking requires very little upkeep. Unlike wood, it doesn’t need to be sanded, stained, or sealed, saving you time and ongoing maintenance costs.

3. Resistant to Rot and Splintering

Because vinyl is a synthetic material, it won’t rot, warp, or splinter over time. This makes it a safer and more comfortable surface for bare feet and frequent use.

4. Slip-Resistant Surface

Many vinyl dock sections are manufactured with textured surfaces that improve traction, even when wet—an important safety feature for swimming and boating activities.

5. Lightweight and Easy to Handle

Vinyl decking is typically lighter than wood or composite materials, making dock sections easier to install, remove, or reposition when needed.

6. Aesthetic Flexibility

Vinyl decking often comes in multiple colors and finishes, allowing homeowners to customize the look of their dock to match their waterfront property.

Long-Term Value

Photo of an aluminum boat dock.
In our last blog, we discussed how the materials used to build your dock contribute directly to safety
and durability. But they do even more than that! In this blog, we’ll discuss how high-quality materials contribute to lower maintenance and long-term value.

Low Maintenance, More Enjoyment

Traditional materials like wood often require:

  • Regular sealing or staining
  • Repairs from rot or insect damage
  • Board replacements over time

In contrast, high-quality materials such as aluminum and vinyl require little to no ongoing maintenance. They don’t need painting, sealing, or frequent repairs—just occasional cleaning to keep them looking their best.

That means enjoying more time on the water and less time working on your dock.

Long-Term Value Over Upfront Cost

It’s tempting to focus on initial price when choosing a dock. But the real cost of a dock includes:

  • Maintenance over time
  • Repairs and part replacements
  • Lifespan of the structure

Lower-quality materials might save money upfront, but they often lead to higher costs down the road.
Investing in premium materials delivers:

  • Longer lifespan
  • Reduced maintenance expenses
  • Greater reliability

In other words, you’re not just buying a dock, you’re making a long-term investment in your waterfront property.

When it comes to aluminum dock manufacturing, materials aren’t just a detail—they’re the foundation of everything.

High-quality materials provide:

  • Strength and durability
  • Safety and stability
  • Low maintenance
  • Long-term value

At the end of the day, a well-built dock should give you peace of mind every time you step onto it.

Durability and Safety

Photo of a long aluminum dock with a boat.
Did you know that what your dock is made of makes a big difference?

The materials used contribute directly to the safety and durability of your dock. Here’s how:

Durability: Built to Withstand the Elements

One of the biggest advantages of premium dock materials is long-term durability.

For example, anodized aluminum is widely recognized for its ability to resist rust, corrosion, and rot—common issues that affect traditional materials like wood. Unlike wood, which can absorb moisture and deteriorate over time, aluminum maintains its structural integrity even in harsh waterfront environments.

In fact, well-built aluminum docks can last over 50 years with minimal degradation, while wood docks often require significant upkeep and may only last 10–20 years depending on conditions.

Safety

High-quality materials contribute directly to:

  • Structural stability under heavy use
  • Slip resistance in wet conditions
  • Consistent performance over time

Inferior materials can lead to issues like splintering, warping, or weakened joints—all of which increase the risk of accidents.

By choosing durable, well-engineered materials, you’re not just improving your dock—you’re protecting your family, your guests, and your equipment.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Other Dock Materials - How Do They Compare?

Photo of an aluminum boat dock made by Alumi-Span.
When building or replacing a dock, the material you choose impacts everything: maintenance,
durability, and long-term value. Here’s how anodized aluminum compares to the most common options.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Wood

Wood offers a classic and natural look, but it comes with ongoing upkeep. Regular staining, sealing, and inspections are needed to prevent rot, splintering, and insect damage. Over time, boards can warp, fasteners loosen, and structural integrity declines.

Anodized aluminum eliminates those concerns. It won’t rot, splinter, or attract insects, and it doesn’t require seasonal treatments. For long-term performance without yearly maintenance, it’s the more practical choice.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Standard Aluminum

Not all aluminum docks perform the same. Standard (mill-finish) aluminum can discolor, develop surface pitting, and take on a chalky appearance over time (especially in humid environments). It may also leave residue on surfaces it contacts.

Anodized aluminum solves these issues by creating a harder, more stable surface that resists corrosion, discoloration, and wear. The result is a dock that maintains both its appearance and performance far longer.

Anodized Aluminum vs. Vinyl

Vinyl is lightweight and low-maintenance, but it has notable limitations. It can become uncomfortably hot in direct sunlight and may be more prone to surface damage under heavy use.

Anodized aluminum stays cooler all summer long, offers greater surface durability, and provides the structural strength needed for larger or more demanding dock setups.

The Verdict

Each material has its place, depending on budget and preference. But when the goal is long-term durability, minimal maintenance, and consistent performance, anodized aluminum stands out as the stronger overall investment.

What Makes Anodized Aluminum the Best Material for Your Dock?

A photo of an aluminum boat dock made by Alumi-Span.
Choosing the right dock material can mean the difference between constant upkeep and decades of
reliable use. Anodized aluminum stands out as a long-term solution built for real waterfront conditions.

It’s Built into the Metal

Anodizing isn’t a coating; it’s a process that transforms the surface of aluminum into a harder, more durable layer. Because it becomes part of the metal, it won’t chip, peel, or wear away over time.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

In waterfront environments, untreated aluminum can discolor and develop surface damage over time. Anodized aluminum creates a protective barrier that helps prevent moisture and environmental wear, keeping your dock looking and performing better for longer.

Low Maintenance

Wood docks require frequent sealing and repairs, and standard aluminum docks can also require upkeep over time. Anodized aluminum docks keep things simple. Rinsing your dock with fresh water is typically all it takes to maintain its appearance and performance.

Built to Last and Looks Great Doing It

Anodized aluminum resists fading, darkening, and uneven wear, maintaining a clean, consistent appearance over time. It’s a material designed to deliver long-term performance for years to come.

Make Your Dock Safe for Young Family Members

Photo of a girl sitting on a boat dock, setting a paper boat in the water below.
In our last blog, we talked about accessories that can help make your dock safer. Here are a few
additional safety tips to go with them:

1. Choose Non-Slip Decking for Foot Traffic

Children tend to sprint across a dock toward the water — and slippery surfaces can turn that excitement into a dangerous slip. Non-slip decking materials are essential:
  • Vinyl and Aluminum Decking with textured treads keeps traction even when wet and bare feet are involved.
  • Hand-sorted Lumber deck boards reduce the risk of splinters.
Whether you select premium wood, vinyl, or aluminum options, surfaces designed to shed water and provide traction help prevent falls.

2. Keep the Dock Well-Lit

Good lighting isn’t just for evening dock parties — it’s a safety essential. Dock lights help families spot changes in walking surfaces, avoid tripping hazards, and safely transit the dock at dusk or after dark.
Solar LED lights or post cap lights are easy to install and low-maintenance.

3. Keep the Walkway Clear & Organized

A cluttered dock is a tripping hazard:
  • Store ropes, life jackets, and water toys in designated bins.
  • Mount paddleboard and kayak racks to keep walkways clear and free of clutter.
Organized docking space makes it easier for kids to walk without unexpected obstacles.

4. Ensure Regular Maintenance

A safe dock isn’t a one-time project — it’s ongoing care. Regular checks help catch and fix:
  • Loose boards
  • Worn connections
  • Mildew or algae buildup that can make surfaces slick
Routine cleaning and seasonal maintenance keep your dock structurally sound and safe for kids.

5. Safety Gear Should Be Easy to Access

Even with the best dock design, accidents can happen:
  • Keep child-sized life jackets near dock entrances so kids can easily grab them before stepping onto the dock.
  • Have first-aid kits nearby with supplies for minor cuts and scrapes.
When safety gear is visible and accessible, family members are more likely to use it.

Boat Dock Parts for Safety

A photo of boat dock bumpers in various colors offered by Alumi-Span Docks.
Your dock may be cleaned up and ready for spring, but is it safe?

A range of accessories can dramatically improve dock safety for young family members:

Dock Bumpers

Soft bumpers around edges cushion hard surfaces that kids might bump into or trip over, and also protect boats and dock edges.

Stairs & Ladders

Easy-to-use stairs or ladders allow kids to enter and exit the water safely — far preferable to climbing on slippery rocks or jumping into deep water without support.

Corner Sections

These eliminate gaps or edges where children might be tempted to jump, giving a smooth, safe transition around the end of your dock.

How to Choose the Right Dock for Your Lakefront Property

Photo of an aluminum boat dock installed in a lake with colorful chairs set up in a semi-circle.
Unsure what type of dock best fits your needs?

Choosing the right boat dock isn’t just about looks — it’s about function, durability, and long-term value.

Factors like water depth, lake bottom conditions, and seasonal water level changes all play a role. For many inland lakes, a stationary aluminum sectional dock offers the best combination of strength, stability, and ease of use.

A well-chosen dock can provide decades of reliable service and countless memories on the water.

Understanding the Most Common Types of Boat Docks

A photo of an aluminum boat dock installed in a lake.
Are you finally ready to install a boat dock?

Not all boat docks are created equal. The right dock for your property depends on your shoreline, water depth, and how you plan to use it.

Stationary docks are a favorite on inland lakes thanks to their stability and long-term durability. Floating docks offer flexibility in deeper water or where water levels fluctuate. Pipe docks can be budget-friendly but often require more maintenance over time. Sectional docks give property owners the ability to customize and expand their layout as needs change.

Understanding these differences makes it much easier to choose a dock that will serve you well for years to come.

Quality Still Comes First

A vintage poster of a boat dock that says "Alumi-Span Docks Sold Here."

2026 is Alumi-Span’s 70th year in business!

One thing that makes us incredibly proud? You can still find 50- and 60-year-old Alumi-Span dock sections out in service today. They’ve weathered countless seasons and are often enjoyed by second and third generations of the same families.

Through all the years and all the changes, our values haven’t budged:

  • Build things the right way
  • Never cut corners
  • Keep improving
  • Offer honest, lasting value
  • And always — always — make it in Michigan

Even today, the F-stringer style developed back in 1961 remains the most practical design for most inland docks. And Alumi-Span continues to lead the way in engineering and craftsmanship.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate this anniversary, we’re filled with gratitude for the families who have trusted our docks, the marinas who have partnered with us, and the generations of Berlin and Hoover family members who poured their energy into making Alumi-Span what it is today.

Where the Alumi-Span Story Begins

A photo of a triangular red flag that says "Alumi-Span" on a gray wooden wall.
2026 marks Alumi-Span’s 70-year anniversary!

Our story starts in 1956 inside Metalloy Foundry, run by mechanical engineer and boating enthusiast Dick Berlin. Back then, docks were heavy, rusty, and made of steel or iron. Dick saw a better way. He created an all-aluminum dock system — lighter, cleaner, and stronger than anything on the market. In fact, some of those very first docks are still out on the water today.

The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

Just a few years later, in 1961, Dick introduced what would become a defining moment for the dock industry: the F-stringer aluminum dock section. By combining F-shaped side beams with interlocking aluminum boards, he created a dock that wasn’t just lighter — it was smarter, safer, and more affordable.

People took notice:
  • Alcoa recognized it as one of the best new aluminum products of the year
  • It appeared in over 20 industry publications
  • And soon, over 200 marinas across the northern states were carrying it
Competitors tried to copy the idea, but the original Alumi-Span system set the bar.

Redesigning Your Dock Layout for Next Season

A photo of an aluminum dock built using Alumi-Span boat dock parts.
Was this summer your boat dock’s last season?

In our last blog, we talked about updating your existing dock for next spring. But what if you’re ready for a whole new setup?

Here’s a few things to consider!

Redesign Your Dock Layout

Has your family outgrown your current dock setup? Off-season is the perfect time to redesign your layout! You can add more slips, create a larger lounging area, or make it easier to launch kayaks and paddleboards, just to name a few ideas. With our modular systems, customization is simple.

Upgrade to a Brand-New Dock

Sometimes, starting fresh is the best solution. Today’s dock systems are designed for easier installation, improved safety, and lower long-term maintenance. An all-new dock ensures decades of reliability. Some of our docks have been in use for over 50 years!

Upgrade Your Dock Hardware This Off-Season

A photo of assorted boat dock hardware parts made by Alumi-Span.
Need to upgrade your dock, but not ready to invest in a brand-new setup?

This off-season, you can replace parts and rebuild your existing dock to make it nicer for the spring, without committing to the time and price of installing an entirely new dock!

Replace Old Hardware & Upgrade Parts

Bolts, brackets, and cleats wear down over time. Replacing rusted or loose hardware now can prevent dangerous failures next season. Consider upgrading to higher-quality hot-dipped galvanized or stainless-steel parts for a longer-lasting dock.

If you already use our hardware, the hot-dipped galvanized won’t corrode, but it can still wear down with age. If your hardware is old, we recommend at least inspecting it to make sure it’s in good shape for next year.

If your dock has seen better days but still has a usable frame, rebuilding may be the best option. New decking materials can bring fresh life to an old dock while keeping costs manageable.

Winterization vs Removal

Photo of a boat dock installed with Alumi-Span parts.
What’s the difference between winterizing a dock and removing it from the lake?

In short, winterization is for boat docks that are permanent and can withstand winter weather in the lake, and removal is for docks that aren’t permanent. Here’s a few tips for preparing for both situations.

If You’re Leaving the Dock in for Winter

Whether or not a dock can be left in depends mostly on the lake.  If your lake doesn’t get large ice flows, AND there are no regulations against it, a dock can be left in. Ice flows are what usually cause dock damage, rather than just plain freezing.

If you’re leaving your dock in, you “winterize” the dock. If that’s your plan:

  • Remove accessories like lights, ladders, bumpers, and cleats to protect them from ice damage.
  • Double-check that cables, anchors, and hardware are in good condition to prevent shifting or breakage.

If You’re Removing the Dock

If your lake gets large ice flows or there are regulations against leaving it in, the dock needs to come out for the winter. If that’s the case:

  • Always remove leg sets from each section before storing.
  • Number your leg sets so when you install your boat dock next spring, you’ll have minimal re-leveling to do—saving both time and effort.
  • Store sections and parts in a secure place to protect.  If you decide to cover them to protect them from snow and ice, be sure there is air flow.  Don’t seal them in completely.

Time to Start Planning for Fall!

Photo of a boat dock installed with Alumi-Span parts.
How do you know when to start winterizing or removing your dock?

Here are a few tips on general timing, as well as regional recommendations!

Signs It’s Time to Start Planning

While every lake and river has its own seasonal rhythm, here are a few signs you should start thinking about dock removal or winterization:

  • Water Temperatures Are Dropping. Cold water makes late-season work more uncomfortable and potentially unsafe.
  • Weather is Becoming Unpredictable. Fall storms can bring wind, waves, and ice sooner than expected.
  • End of Boating Season. Once you’re done with boats and personal watercraft for the year, your dock’s off-season prep can begin.

Regional Timing Recommendations

Your ideal timing will depend on your location. Here are a few examples:

  • Northern Climates: Ice formation can start as early as October or November, so removal or winterization should happen before freezing conditions set in.
  • Milder Regions: You may have more flexibility, but don’t wait until heavy winds or snow are in the forecast.
  • Fluctuating Water Levels: If your area sees significant water level changes in the fall, factor that into your schedule to avoid working in unsafe conditions.
